Types Of 6” x 48” Sanding Belts We Offer
Red Label Abrasives manufactures several different types of 6 x 48 inch sanding belts. You can read more about each type of belt we offer below.
Open coat aluminum oxide: Aluminum oxide is one of the most popular abrasive grains, because of its low price point. Open coat aluminum oxide provides more space between grains, which allows for more air flow between grains. More air flow keeps sanding surfaces cool and also helps to prevent the sanding belt from clogging. Open coat aluminum oxide is great for sanding softer materials that produce a lot of debri. It is commonly used in woodworking.
Closed coat aluminum oxide: Closed coat aluminum oxide is still produced with aluminum oxide grains, but there is less space between grains. More abrasive grains provide a more aggressive cut. Closed coat aluminum oxide works better for sanding harder materials like hardwoods and metals.
Zirconia: Zirconia was the strongest abrasive grain before ceramic entered the market. Zirconia lasts longer and cuts faster than aluminum oxide. Zirconia is a popular abrasive grain, because it strikes a nice balance between performance and price. It is most effective when used on harder materials, such as metals and hardwoods.
Ceramic: Ceramic is a premium abrasive grain and one of the strongest abrasive grains available in the market. Ceramic sanding belts last significantly longer than aluminum oxide and zirconia belts. Ceramic comes with a higher price point, but you often save money and time in the long run. Ceramic also works best for sanding metals and hardwoods.
Silicon carbide: Silicon carbide is a specialty abrasive. It’s not as versatile as many of the other abrasive grains, but it sands certain materials very well. Silicon carbide is commonly used to sand marble, garnet, and glass. It also works great for knife sharpening. Silicon carbide belts are designed to remove material without excessive heat buildup. This makes silicon carbide belts the ideal choice for sanding heat sensitive materials.
