Grit Equivalents Of Our Surface Conditioning Belts
Non-woven belts aren’t rated by grit, because there technically isn’t any grit on the belt. Nevertheless, you can expect certain surface conditioning belts to work similar to certain grit sizes. Below are the grit equivalents of our surface conditioning belts.
- Coarse (Brown) is equivalent to P120-P150
- Medium (Maroon) is equivalent to P150-P180
- Fine (Blue) is equivalent to P240-P280
What Are Surface Conditioning Belts & What Are They Used For?
Non-woven belts and surface conditioning belts are terms used interchangeably that refer to the same type of belt. You may be familiar with Scotch-Brite sanding belts, which are 3M's branded version of surface conditioning belts. Surface conditioning or non-woven belts are used to deburr, clean, blend, and finish contours, edges on irregular aluminum, stainless steel, or steel surfaces.
Surface conditioning belts are commonly used in knife making to achieve an even, satin finish on blades. You’ll end up saving a lot of time over trying to hand sand a mirror finish.
If you’re using surface conditioning belts for the first time, you’ll want to keep a few things in mind. First, you’ll want to use light to medium pressure with these belts. The coarse belts especially require light pressure. If you apply too much pressure, you’ll remove too much material too fast. You’ll also want to follow a proper grit sequence from coarse to medium to fin and super fine.

Not a knife maker, but I sure do admire the beautiful work on display here. I’m a retired MRO manager in manufacturing ... with a soft spot for manual machine tools that follow me home to live in the basement. I purchased three 3-packs of 2 x 42 Inch Surface Conditioning Belts to extend the utility of a little JET 2 x 42 Belt / 8 inch Disc Combination Sander. It’s a 3-wheel machine “rated” at 3/4 HP. The Surface Conditioning Belts are thick and fairly stiff. The little Jet has enough oomph to run them, but anything smaller will most likely struggle. As it is, I had to do some remedial parting line cleanup around the lower mouth of the cast iron frame to gain enough clearance for the thicker belt. I noticed one of the nine belts had a joint that looked a bit sketchy. I set a photo to Red Label Support, they concurred and sent not just a replacement, but an entire new 3-Pack. 5-Star Customer Service Beyond All Expectations !!

I have a 2" x 42" belt sander for knife sharpening , it has 2 wheels , it has a pretty strong tensioning spring ( not ridiculously strong ) and it does not have enough tension to take up the slack , the motor wheel just spins , there's slack from platen , and when I finally got the belt spinning it didn't do any better than if I'd used sandpaper. By the time I had a need to use them the time had expired to return them ( I didn't need them right away but when I did it was too late ) so I threw them away. With that said I imagine if you have a sander with 4 wheels like the Grizzly co makes ( no I'm not trying to give them free advertising ) it might work well , the belts are stiff so my 2 1/2" wheels weren't big enough for the belts to flex and conform to my machine. I used sanding belts and got the results I need.

these are a must have to finish or clean up knives. I like the fine and medium the most but the course does come in handy at times on metal that really needs to be cleaned.
