Non-woven belts aren’t rated by grit, because there technically isn’t any grit on the belt. Nevertheless, you can expect certain surface conditioning belts to work similar to certain grit sizes. Below are the grit equivalents of our surface conditioning belts.

    • Coarse (Brown) is equivalent to P120-P150
    • Medium (Maroon) is equivalent to P150-P180
    • Fine (Blue) is equivalent to P240-P280
    • Super Fine (Grey) is equivalent to P1000-P2000

What Are Surface Conditioning Belts & What Are They Used For?

Non-woven belts and surface conditioning belts are terms used interchangeably that refer to the same type of belt. You may already be familiar with Scotch-Brite belts. Those belts are 3M's version of non-woven belts. Surface conditioning or non-woven belts are used to deburr, clean, blend, and finish contours, edges on irregular aluminum, stainless steel, or steel surfaces.

Surface conditioning belts are commonly used in knife making to achieve an even, satin finish on blades. You’ll end up saving a lot of time over trying to hand sand a mirror finish.

If you’re using surface conditioning belts for the first time, you’ll want to keep a few things in mind. First, you’ll want to use light to medium pressure with these belts. The coarse belts especially require light pressure. If you apply too much pressure, you’ll remove too much material too fast. You’ll also want to follow a proper grit sequence from coarse to medium to fine and super fine.

What Can Surface Conditioning Belts Be Used On?

Surface conditioning belts can be used on both airfile belt sanders and conventional belt sanders. Our 2 x 72 non-woven belts won’t fit any airfile sanders, but they will fit any conventional 2 x 72 sanders, including the Brodbeck Ironworks grinders, KMG Industrial Grinder, Reeder Grinders, Hardcore Belt Grinder, Wilton Square Wheel Grinder, and more.

I absolutely love these belts! They're great for smoothing highs and lows, even at pretty course grits. In the case of the "Super Fine", they can blend structured abrasive lines very well! They're worth every penny!

I have consistent good results using Red Label belts. This includes the ceramic, silicon and conditioning belts. My most recent purchase was for the fine grade conditioning belts. They do a fantastic job of cleaning up the finish of my blades. I am very satisfied. I will be back.

Here's a knife I recently finished using Red Label Conditioning belts. It started as a 1095 blank and has a Honduras Mahogany handle. I ordered and used the 3 pack set of belts which consist of course, medium and fine. My next order will consist of the super fine belts.

These conditioning belts are great for satin finishing blades. The blade shown was pretty beat up after some performance testing, but the sequence of coarse-medium-fine conditioning belts brought it back nicely. Having used these on several different styles of knife, I think I probably want to add the super-fine grit to my arsenal. The finish left by the fine grit is still a bit rough and would probably warrant an extra step up for most blades. Personal preference. Also, if you're hollow grinding with these, the thickness of the belt means you should probably do the hollow grinding with a smaller wheel than the original profile grind, or you'll blur the edges of your grind lines. All told, great product, does just what I hoped, and with the addition of the super-fine will give me an easy finishing sequence for EDC blades.

These surfaces conditioning betls are worth their weight in gold. Excellent for evening out high and low spots once you're down to your finishing grits. I work through these 4 belts before any extra fine finishing is done. It simply saves time and money. I have been running the first 3 for 4 months with moderate daily use. Tons of life left on them! The ultra fine I replaced 2 weeks ago. I highly recommend them. You won't regret the investment.

I love these conditioning belts. I’ve used them on hundreds of hammer faces, flatters, and other tools like that that I sell for a living. I use a course, then temper my tools, and then polish it up on the fine conditioning belts
