Aluminum oxide is considered the workhorse grain of the abrasive industry. It is the most popular abrasive grain because it is both low-cost and effective at removing material. Aluminum oxide is highly friable - the grain fragments with use to provide a sharp cutting surface throughout the lifespan of the belt. Aluminum oxide is a great choice for general use applications. Open coat aluminum oxide belts are very popular amongst woodworkers.

Open Coat Vs. Closed Coat Aluminum Oxide

Aluminum oxide belts are available in two different coatings: open and closed coat. The coating refers to how much of a belt’s surface is covered with abrasive grains. Approximately 50-70% of a belt’s surface is covered with abrasive grains for open coat belts. On the other hand, 90-95% of the belt’s surface is covered with abrasive grains for closed coat belts.

Closed coat aluminum oxide belts cut more aggressively and are designed to sand hard and dense materials like steel and other metals. Open coat aluminum oxide is designed for softer materials and is commonly used for woodworking applications. The additional space between grains allows for more air flow and reduces the likelihood that sanding residue will get stuck between the grains.

Excellent product Tony, and thanks for reminding me that the belt is ok to run both ways (ignore the the arrow on the belt itself). I use this belt on a Jet 6" x 89" oscillating belt sander almost daily but I have waited to send this review in until I had put some miles on it. Of course this is not my first belt I've gotten from you guys, this is probably the 5th one. I get the 150 grit and it works great, it can hog down when needed and used lightly it can put a nice smooth finish especially on end grain. At first, I thought the belt was defective as it was loose and floppy on the top and tight and smooth in the middle (the bottom has a little slackness as well). First thing I did was flip the belt over and it was the same that way also, so I knew it wasn't the belt. The manual for my sander says most of the settings are not adjustable (except for tracking) but way in the back was a page that talked about the motor plate that was "factory adjusted" but could be adjusted if the tracking was way off. I could adjust the tracking, no problem, from the top adjuster but I thought I would measure the motor/drive pulley's relation to the rest of the machine. Wow! It was way off. I made some shims and adjusted the bolts and now it's about 90% corrected. What a difference! I was in the middle of a project and had to get back to it, but soon I'm going to get serious and make it perfect. Just wanted to share that with you so you could get a feel what your belts are doing out in the world! Thanks again for a great product. Your company got recommended to me by a friend. I was looking for some 6”x89” belts for my edge sander. I ordered some from you to try. The initial conformation said it would take 4-5 day to manufacture. I ordered them on a Tuesday night and they were shipped the next day and I had them Friday. So you must of had some in stock. I have been using Red Label Abrasives sanding belts on my 6x89" sander for a couple of years now. They outlast the OEM name brand belts that are more expensive. The use oof a good abrasive sanding cleaning stick periodically makes them last even longer. I would recommend this product.
